I hear so many people say, “I can’t do yoga”, “I’m not flexible”, “I can’t stretch”, and “yoga is not for me” without ever even giving it a chance.
I’ve heard it all!
Most people do not even know what yoga means.
The word “yoga” is taken from the Sanskrit word “yuj”, which means “to yoke”, “to join” or “to unite”.
Okay, so…join with what?
It is a union of breath and movement. It is a union of body and mind.
It is connecting to the unconditional love within us; the divine within us. The part of us that is connected to everyone and everything else as one collective consciousness, the true oneness of it all. Bringing body, mind, and spirit in harmony.
Yoga is so much more than just physical postures. There are eight limbs of yoga, asana (poses), being only one of them. Meditation is another limb, and pranayama (breathwork) is another. Every class, every teacher, every school of yoga, is different. There are gentle classes to much more physical power classes where you push not only your body but also your mind. There are classes with lots of chanting, raising energy and kundalini, and there are classes with lots of quiet, giving space for the practitioner to go within. There are classes that provide deeper stretching, and others that provide a deeper workout. There are classes with lots of meditation, and classes more focused on relaxing the body and the mind and “letting go”.
Yoga is all about finding your higher self, and seeing the divine in you and all around you…in nature and in every other soul on the planet. Namaste means the divine in me honors the divine in you.
I encourage everyone to give it a try. If you do not connect on your first try, then try, try again. You many not connect to a particular place or a particular teacher. I always say give everything a second chance as that teacher or “place” may have been having an “off day”. Try other studios and other teachers until you find one that speaks to you; the one that speaks to your soul. When you find that true connection, you will know.
